Envi MP-125 and MP-135 Manual Phoropters

Envi's manual phoropter family in both cylinder conventions: the MP-125 in minus cylinder and the MP-135 in plus cylinder.

Overview

The MP-125 and MP-135 are the same manual refractor offered in the two cylinder conventions. The MP-125 is the minus cylinder instrument that most optometric practices refract with; the MP-135 is the plus cylinder version that ophthalmology practices and residency-trained refractionists often prefer. Choosing between them is not a specification comparison, it is a question of how your clinicians were trained and what the rest of your lane speaks. The MP-125 is the phoropter included in Envi's Essentials package, the pre-built lane bundle for practices equipping a room end to end.

Minus cylinder or plus cylinder

This is the whole decision. Optometric training in the United States is predominantly minus cylinder, so the MP-125 is the common choice. Plus cylinder refraction is more usual in ophthalmology, which is what the MP-135 is for. Mixing conventions across lanes in the same practice creates avoidable friction when staff move between rooms, so it is worth settling the question once for the whole office rather than per purchase.

Who this is a good fit for

If none of these describe your practice, it is probably not the right choice, and we will tell you that.

What to ask on a demo

A demo is worth more when you arrive with your own cases and a list of questions. Here is what we would raise.

  • Confirm which cylinder convention your clinicians refract in before ordering
  • Check the phoropter arm fit against your chosen Envi stand
  • Ask whether the Essentials package is the better route if you are building a whole lane
  • Compare against a digital head if EMR transfer matters to you
